Community-based enterprises that work with forest produce can reduce inequity and lift marginalized communities. Ghummar Mahila Producer Company Limited (GMPCL) shows how women-led enterprises can drive rural economic growth and social development while conserving natural resources.
GMPCL was founded so tribal women can lead, not only participate. Equity and empowerment are written into its constitution, with fair opportunities and benefits for members. The company focuses on value addition to local non-timber forest products — especially Sitafal / custard apple (Annona squamosa), Jamun (Syzygium cumini) and guava — turned into Custard Apple Pulp, Jamun Slice and Guava Pulp.
How processing works
GMPCL runs 45 village-level collection centres, close to members’ homes. Families bring fruit they have collected or grown. Under GMPCL leadership they extract pulp, prepare slices and separate seeds. Produce is sent on to the main processing unit for packing, hardening and freezing.
About 5,000 tribal families take part. Women sell produce to the producer company and work as leaders, bookkeepers, packing staff and in other roles. They are also shareholders and receive dividends from profits.
Impact

Mission
GMPCL exists to empower tribal women, promote equity, and protect the environment while building sustainable incomes. Training in post-harvest handling, processing and financial literacy helps women become leaders as well as workers.

- Custard Apple Pulp (Sitafal) — packed, hardened and frozen for ice creams and desserts.
- Jamun Slice — prepared from Jamun fruit for health-conscious buyers.
- Guava Pulp — processed guava for drinks, desserts and further food use.
